Finnish school shooters and House - Humanity is overrated
I'm sure the Europeans among my f-list know all about the tragedy at Finnish Jokela Gymnasium - and since it's multiple violent deaths by gun in a school it might have even made it to the US?
I'm not going to talk about reasons, motivations or sanity. It's horrible, there is no excuse whatsoever for committing an atrocity like this, nothing I say could ever adequately do justice to the horror and grief the victims and relatives feel and there'll be discussion enough...
But when I just checked a newssite I stumbled upon a new photo of the shooter wearing a particular shirt. And that now chilled me for a whole different reason: a fandom one in particular.
Because the shirt said "Humanity is overrated" and I immediately identified it as a House-quote, from the "Pilot" to be specific. You can buy the shirt at the shop of the Housemd-guide site here
I'm sure if it hasn't happened already others will draw the same parallel and there will be media coverage. And I really don't think that's a good thing.
Obviously mass-murdering wasn't the sentiment conveyed or endorsed in the line from House the character nor the writers, every moron should see that.
But am I paranoid in thinking there will be nonetheless a negative backlash from an amok running teen (possibly a House-fan I shudder to think) having worn it, posing with the gun used to kill 7 people yesterday?
